Statement of Congressman Pierluisi Regarding the President’s Address on the American Jobs Act

President Obama has called upon Congress to take immediate action to stimulate job creation in the United States, and he will soon be transmitting draft legislation to Congress to achieve that objective.

I have already been in communication with White House officials to urge them to ensure that Puerto Rico will be eligible to participate in all major components of the plan proposed by the President, and I will conduct the necessary outreach with Congressional leadership in order to make certain that the Island is included in any legislation enacted as a result of the President’s proposal.

Employees and employers in Puerto Rico would benefit from the President’s proposal to cut payroll taxes. Like tyheir counterparts in the states, employers on the Island should be made eligible to receive tax credits for hiring unempoyed individuals and veterans. And any federal program designed to support school construction and other infrastructure projects throughout the country, including Puerto Rico, would provide a much-needed lift to the economy.

For the good of the country, including Puerto Rico, I hope that Congress will respond to the President’s call for action.”
